Electronic waste is a generic term for electrical and electronic waste material including, but not limited to various household and office appliances such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, televisions and computers, portable digital devices, mobile phones and toys.

Electronic waste represents approximately 5% of solid household waste, and is currently the fastest growing waste sector.

Approximately 20-50 million tons of electronic waste is generated each year around the world. These huge amounts, in combination with electronic products, contain a variety of hazardous substances that make electronic scrap a global environmental problem.

If unprofessionally discarded, dangerous substances may be released in the atmosphere. In addition, during some processing, while original components of electronic scrap, is broken down, new toxic compounds are formed (eg dioxins).
